Metabolic Testing

WHAT IS METABOLIC TESTING?

Metabolic testing is a chance to learn how your own body fuels itself both at rest and when you’re exercising.

Why does this matter?

If you want to perform your best in whatever you’re doing – whether it’s on the road, on the track, or in the mountains – you need to know how your body's going to respond in real-time to changing demands.

EXPLAINING METABOLISM

Your metabolism is the measure of how you use food energy as fuel to power your body. Your body requires a constant supply of food (carbs, fats, and proteins) that can be converted in to energy (calories).

Your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is the measurement of the amount of calories your body needs each day just to survive in a state of rest. Your RMR can be used to help calculate how many calories you need to consume daily to stay healthy and performing your best.

For fueling our activities, our bodies use a combination of fats and carbohydrates*. The ratio of this combination depends on the specific energy demands of our activity.

We have two main energy systems that keep us moving – aerobic and anaerobic.

The aerobic system preferentially uses fats for fuel (which even the thinnest among us have plenty of).  It requires oxygen, and is limited by how quickly and efficiently we can deliver that oxygen to this system.

The anaerobic system, does not require oxygen. This is the system that allows us to produce a lot of power, very quickly. The downside is, that because of the metabolic byproducts it creates, we can’t sustain that power over a very long period of time (seconds to minutes depending on the intensity of the activity.

We need both systems, but if we can train our bodies to take a bigger contribution of energy from fats, then we can go longer and harder, and ultimately perform better, before we have to slow down.

And metabolic testing helps us do that.

TESTING METABOLISM

At Body Smart you’ll have both an RMR test and a VO2 Max test. The RMR test will help you determine what your body needs at a base level to fuel your lifestyle day to day. You’ll also learn at what intensities to exercise to preserve and build lean muscle and maximize your fitness effort to meet your goals.

Exercise testing or VO2Max testing is performed while being monitored with specialized equipment that measures the amount of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) you breath in and out.

Just as a car puts off exhaust after burning fuel, our bodies put off carbon dioxide after burning calories. The measured ratio of O2 and CO2 breathed out during exercise gives us the information about what type of fuel you are burning. Pretty cool huh?!?

Measuring these values and comparing them along with YOUR heart rate allows us to determine the EXACT heart rate ranges you need to work out in to be most successful.

Training within those ranges will, over time, help your body adapt to using fat as the primary fuel source over a MUCH WIDER range of heart rates, allowing you to go faster and further for longer.

Whether sports performance or weight loss is your goal, knowing how you burn fats and carbohydrates most effectively will help you to safely and more effectively achieve your goals.

With Body Smart you can stop guessing and know that you are doing the right thing for your metabolism.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON TEST DAY
QUESTION: HOW DO YOU MEASURE “METABOLISM” THEN?
KORR™ MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES HELPS GIVE THE SCIENTIFIC ANSWER

Indirect calorimetry (a measurement of metabolic rate) relies on the fact that burning 1 calorie (Kilocalorie) requires 208.06 milliliters of oxygen. Because of this very direct relationship between caloric burn and oxygen consumed, measurements of oxygen uptake (VO2) and caloric burn rate are virtually interchangeable.

Oxygen uptake requires a precise measurement of the volume of expired air and of the concentrations of oxygen in the inspired and expired air. The process requires that all of the air a person breathes out be collected and analyzed while they rest quietly. The KORR™ indirect calorimeters contain a precision air flow sensor that measures the volume of expired air, and an oxygen and carbon dioxide sensor that measures the concentration of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Once the factors of humidity, temperature and relative humidity are accounted for, the KORR™ instrument provides the most accurate results available in a compact metabolic analyzer.

At KORR™ Medical Technologies, we know the science of metabolic testing holds the key to healthy weight loss, accurate nutritional assessments, and effective cardiovascular training. Our years of scientific research can help you to unlock the mystery of “metabolism” with the worlds most accurate and reliable compact metabolic analyzers. KORR™ products will give you solutions you can trust. Real Science…Real Solutions.
