Metabolic Testing

WHAT IS METABOLIC TESTING?

One of the most common questions I get is, “Do I even have a metabolism anymore?” The answer is YES! But if you are wondering that, it most likely isn’t what it used to be in your teens or twenties. At Body Smart we can help you learn exactly why, and what you can do about it for YOUR Body!

Because each body is different, and due to a lot of voices in the media and various fitness professionals, I find that metabolism is a poorly understood and often misrepresented aspect of our health. Let’s try to bring a little clarity to it.

EXPLAINING METABOLISM

Your metabolism is the measure of how you use food energy as fuel to power your body. Your body requires a constant supply of food (carbs, fats, and proteins) that can be converted in to energy (calories).

Your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is the measurement of the amount of calories your body needs each day just to survive in a state of rest. Your RMR can be used to help calculate the limits of how many calories you need to consume daily to stay healthy.

Eating fewer calories than your body requires to preserve its basic function often works to slow down your metabolism. Low calorie “diets” cause your body to respond by decreasing metabolic rate.

If you keep this up long term, you can also begin catabolizing (eating up) muscle tissue during and after exercise as an energy source. High intensity workouts can break down the muscle even faster and cause even greater muscle loss.

These types of metabolism mistakes rob you of lean muscle tissue, trigger hormones in your body to hold onto calories, and cause your metabolism to further drop. Your body is really good at preserving itself. If we don’t fuel it right, it will learn how to survive off fewer calories in whatever way it can. I see this so often I even wrote a book about it – 5 Keys to Avoiding Fitness Sabotage.

If you’ve tried everything and spend HOURS exercising and see little to no result, you NEED a metabolic test. I’ll be able to show you the math of why previous diets and strenuous workout plans have failed you in the past.

More importantly though, I’ll be able to show you a clear path forward. You’ll be able to clearly see the steps you need to take to master your metabolism and accomplish your health, fitness and performance goals!

TESTING METABOLISM

At Body Smart you will have a RMR test to help you determine what your safe lower limit of calorie intake will be. You’ll also learn what at what intensities to exercise to preserve and build lean muscle and maximize your fitness effort to meet your goals.

Exercise testing or VO2Max testing is performed while being monitored with a specialized calorimeter. This equipment helps to measure the amount of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) you breath in and out.

Just as a car puts off exhaust after burning fuel, our bodies put off carbon dioxide after burning calories. The measured ratio of O2 and CO2 breathed out during exercise gives us the information about what type of fuel you are burning. Pretty cool huh?!?

Measuring these values and comparing them along with YOUR heart rate allows us to determine the EXACT heart rate ranges you need to work out in to be most successful.

Whether sports performance or weight loss is your goal, knowing how you burn fats and carbohydrates most effectively will help you to safely and more effectively achieve your goals.

With Body Smart you can stop guessing and know that you are doing the right thing for your metabolism.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON TEST DAY
QUESTION: HOW DO YOU MEASURE “METABOLISM” THEN?
KORR™ MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES HELPS GIVE THE SCIENTIFIC ANSWER

Indirect calorimetry (a measurement of metabolic rate) relies on the fact that burning 1 calorie (Kilocalorie) requires 208.06 milliliters of oxygen. Because of this very direct relationship between caloric burn and oxygen consumed, measurements of oxygen uptake (VO2) and caloric burn rate are virtually interchangeable.

Oxygen uptake requires a precise measurement of the volume of expired air and of the concentrations of oxygen in the inspired and expired air. The process requires that all of the air a person breathes out be collected and analyzed while they rest quietly. The KORR™ indirect calorimeters contain a precision air flow sensor that measures the volume of expired air, and an oxygen and carbon dioxide sensor that measures the concentration of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Once the factors of humidity, temperature and relative humidity are accounted for, the KORR™ instrument provides the most accurate results available in a compact metabolic analyzer.

At KORR™ Medical Technologies, we know the science of metabolic testing holds the key to healthy weight loss, accurate nutritional assessments, and effective cardiovascular training. Our years of scientific research can help you to unlock the mystery of “metabolism” with the worlds most accurate and reliable compact metabolic analyzers. KORR™ products will give you solutions you can trust. Real Science…Real Solutions”
