Video 1 - Muscle Strain or Sprain

Muscle strains and joint sprains are typically caused by poor warm up prior to activity, poor conditioning, or muscle or joint fatigue/overuse

What are some ways you can avoid these?

-Learn a routine for and do an active warm up before sport or activity, don’t stretch. Stretching can actually increase injury risk.

-Strengthen core muscles. Focus on both the back muscles as well as the abdominal muscles – not just the 6 pack abs. Spend time training the deeper abs which serve as the body’s natural back brace. Not sure how? At Body Smart we teach every back pain patient how to create your natural back brace so you can avoid pain and problems in the future.

Video 2 - Disc-related

You may have heard it by many names: Bulging discs, disc protrusion, rupture disc, a disc tear, herniated disc, or even the nasty sounding “I blew a disc”

Essentially, all of these things are referring to the same thing, some just represent varying degrees of injury. So what is going on here? Let’s do a mini anatomy review.

The spine is built like a stack of blocks with mini jelly donuts separating them. (Weird analogy I know, but stick with me) These jelly donuts are the shock absorbers, or discs, in between each of the bones. When we spend time bent forward we squish only one side of the disc. As this continues, the jelly filled center (nucleus pulposus) of the donut is going to be squished out the back side. Over time this wears down the back of the donut (annulus fibrosus) and creates a weakness or tear. Once the donut is compromised the jelly can leak out and press on the surrounding nerves and create pain. (See the pictures in the video to see what we’re talking about)
