In a previous post, I shared with you how to make your divide up your Calorie Budget by meal groups. This may have left you thinking great!!, but how do figure out what foods fit my budget? Let’s take a look at some Calorie Tetris to figure this out! 1. First, I start with my calorie budget by testing with Body Smart. If my budget is for 1800 calories then I would break it down to calorie budget meal groups like these: Breakfast - 400 Snack - 100 Lunch - 500 Snack - 100 Dinner - 700 2. Next, I write down a list of all of the foods that I like to eat (or that I will eat) for each meal. Admittedly, I’m not much of a breakfast person. I often have to force myself to eat breakfast and part of the trouble is knowing what to eat. By writing down a list it eliminates the problem of staring into the pantry with a blank look wondering what I should do. Instead, I just refer to the list and pick out some items. Breakfast Lunch Snacks Egg, Boiled 2 Slices bread 20 Almonds Toast 1 slice cheese 13 Cashews Milk, 8oz Deli turkey 3oz Hummus 2 oz Cheesestick 1 Cucumber Tortilla Chips Banana Carrots 3 oz Pita Chips Apple Hummus, 2 oz Beef Jerky Peanut Butter Greek Yogurt Dip Nutella 1/2 Avocado 3. Step 3 is to then to take my lists and put some calorie amounts to them. There are great websites like calorieking.com or apps like My Fitness Pal that can help you calculate how many calories and what a serving size is for each item. Some of these I round up just to make the math easy. Breakfast Lunch Snacks Egg, Boiled 100 2 Slices bread 225 20 Almonds 150 Toast 100 1 slice cheese 100 13 Cashews 150 Milk, 8oz 100 Deli turkey 3oz 100 Hummus 2 oz 100 Cheesestick 100 1 Cucumber 50 Tortilla Chips 100 Banana 100 Carrots 3 oz 50 Pita Chips 100 Apple 100 Hummus, 2 oz 100 Beef Jerky 100 Peanut Butter 200 Greek Yogurt Dip 100 Nutella 200 1/2 Avocado 1504 The 4th step is to stop staring blankly into the pantry, look at my list and add up a few items that sound good in the moment. Instead of wondering I can pick from a list of food I LIKE, which taste GOOD to ME, and that work for MY LIFESTYLE! 5. Watch for dinner time tips coming in the next few weeks. Dinner time tends to a bit more tricky for calorie budget management due to social eating. It has its own set of challenges that we’ll address though up-coming posts.
